The new Pep Boys facility was completed in two phases at a total 1,140,000 s.f. and is located within a 58-acre site formerly occupied by the Norton Air Force Base, now called AllianceCalifornia™, in the city of San Bernardino. The facility replaced Pep Boys’ existing three-building distribution complex located in Los Angeles. This allowed for a substantial increase in capacity for the nation’s leading automotive aftermarket retail and service chain.
The first phase of the building was the construction of a 600,000 s.f. concrete tilt-up structure that featured 30-ft. minimum interior clearance, dock high loading with 60 doors and an early suppression, fast response fire sprinkler system. The racking storage and material-handling portion of the building is state of the art and featured a three-story racking system in a portion of the building. Extensive amounts of reflective glass at the two-story entryway lead to 20,000 square feet of offices and training space. Blue accent striping and red window frames echo the company’s all-American red, white, and blue logo. Extensive parking and landscaping were also a large part of the exterior work required on this project.
Phase II expanded the new regional distribution center building with an additional 540,000 s.f. facility.
