The Pegasus School is a co-ed, non-profit, non-sectarian day school in Huntington Beach, California that serves pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Their new science and technology building, built by Oltmans Construction Co., expands the school’s STEM program for both lower and middle school students.

The new building, integrated into the original 1960s architecture, includes general classrooms, specialized science lab classrooms, and technology labs to support instruction for all grades and ages. The project also involved the construction of new classrooms and science labs within the existing campus and hosts classrooms for music, Spanish courses, and all eighth-grade academics. A new middle school quad provides students with a beautiful space for outdoor classroom learning and a place to gather with amphitheater-style seating and ample shade.

Preconstruction & Construction Delivery

Oltmans Construction Co. was involved in preconstruction delivery for nine (9) months from budgeting through design. During pre-construction, the project management team was responsible for identifying key areas to track budgeting and provided value engineering options. A collaborative value engineering process was used with key subcontractors providing insight on soil stabilization, skin coordination, and campus fire alarm tie-ins.

In regards to the complexity of the site, the new building required Oltmans to install approximately 300 displaced rock columns which had to be completed on an active campus without disrupting classes, staff, or students during the school day.

Safety was the team’s top priority during construction especially on an active campus with surrounding residential neighbors and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our safety and project team, along with our on-site field superintendent, ensured tight site coordination and all safety precautions were exercised. The project was delivered on time for the first day of school.
